Viris's chronicles Prologue Echoes of the Past
Prologue of Viris’s Chronicles    cameron arenburg

Garmenian (planet of grass) plains... South Western

Viris lay prone on the grass plains overlooking New Vorbis, his rifle primed and snares laid along the path “This” would take. He was clad in green camouflage armour to ensure his prey wouldn’t notice him, and as he awaited ‘This’s’ arrival he pondered upon the events that led up to his decision.

6 months earlier.... Militia HQ... New Vorbis

I walked into the militia recruitment office, propaganda of the coalition’s recruitment ads and the latest report on the insurgents movements. The insurgents are a force that rebels against the coalition. Although this was alien to us citizens of New Vorbis, the coalition always seemed to like to make shadows into monsters.  New Vorbis had always been a calm city until the coalition began to spread its influence to more... rural settlements. However, it had a militia that served as both its policing force and infantry during times when bandits would attack.
The office was as organized and clean as one would expect the President to enforce. This was the president of the city, and he ruled justly, offering a haven for those fleeing insurgent harassment. I had never seen This, but I heard that he radiated a feeling of compassion and kindness.
I snapped back into reality at the smile of the recruitment lady. “Do you wish to join the militia, citizen?” she asked
    “Yes,” I said
She then took some forms out of her desk and handed them to me, smiling while she told me I have 3 days to complete these forms. Contained in the documents were the regular ID check, role request, and liability form. Essentially, it was a large amount of paper work for a job that dealt mostly with common thugs and ruffians. After receiving the forms I walked out of the office, reviewing the documents and walked down the people saturated streets.
Present time outskirts of New Vorbis

All Viris knew was that ‘This’ was a human with a mark on his head. Viris wasn’t told why he was supposed to hunt ‘This’. ‘This’ only important aspect was that he was the president of New Vorbis.
Waiting for This meant time for thinking, something a bounty hunter learned to ignore. I  had never truly enjoyed ‘the hunt’. ...I  readied his rifle, instinctively reacting to my environment. The rustle of grass loomed close... trigger squeezed. The feathered scaly head of a lizard appeared. I released the trigger, “Come here my friend,” I said affectionately.
The reptile was a cross between a lizard and a bird. It had the beak of a bird, and along its spine brightly coloured feathers protruded. He cooed at me as I petted along his back. I had acquired his company by chance. I had found him half dead on the outskirts of New Vorbis; back when I was a citizen and not a political assassin. It was during the first patrol, that I found the lizard. The lizard had been at my side since I rescued him.
    5 months earlier
I ran down the street, pistol in hand, the black clad figure ahead of me futilely attempting to escape. It had started with a thunder storm, then a call to the local armoury saying someone had triggered the alarm on the perimeter fence. Rain poured down, and mud sucked at my feet trying to slow my pursuit. I laughed to myself and thought even the
environment is preventing us from doing our work.  I slowed down, to watch the spectacle... the black clad figure then tripped over the wire placed conveniently along his path. From the rooftops blue clad policemen rappelled down. The black clad man then tried to get up, and I felt my feet lift off the ground as I jumped towards the man.
    “Get down scum,” someone screamed.
The rush of adrenaline even from this simple task of taking down a thief gave me an energy rush that would surely drain me afterwards. The other two policemen then handcuffed him, and radioed in for the repulsorcar to come in. The effects of adrenaline soon released its strenuous grip on me.
The hood of the black clad man prevented me from seeing the scum’s face. As rain poured down his hood, I felt anger radiating from the man. There was nothing more, that I hated, than dishonourable men. The repulsorcar came down the street, glistening with the rain. The black clad man glared at me through his enshrouding hood. I smirked at him triumphantly and turned away to continue my patrol.
Present time... outskirts of New Vorbis
A feeling of betrayal surged in me. Since the first meeting of This I knew that he was bound to my fate. Somehow he radiated a feeling of secrecy; as if he knew something that disturbed him and created unease. I pondered upon my to-do actions. There was no honour in killing This, he had done nothing. I cursed myself for my thinking. A bounty hunter with morals never got the mark.
                    2 months earlier

I sat down to my couch, my lizard lay sprawled along the foot of it. The lizard deceptively looked asleep, but even in its current state it continued to scan for intruders and misplaced sounds. I had requested to bring along my lizard, saying it would provide the squad with more assets to tracking the suspects. The lizard had performed above what even I had expected; it could incapacitate enemies with less collateral damage and damage to the suspect. It seemed able to be both dangerous and harmless at the same time. The wind shook my house, and rattled the videoscreen at the opposite end of the room. Then the satphon rang. The lizard woke with a start and cocked its head around the room looking for the source of the ringing. I reluctantly got up and walked to get the staphon. I picked it up and on the other line a voice said, “Congratulations viris, you’ve just been promoted to special forces.”
I then stood in shock, ranking up so quickly was odd, but then again I had an almost perfect record. I responded, “Great... so what am I to do now.”
The man chuckled, “Well son, someone high up took notice of your handiwork, and decided to give you a position that is experimental currently.”
A rush of emotions flew through me; of sadness, anger, and contempt. I quickly gathered myself and responded, “What is this position sir.”
I felt something rubbing against my leg; the lizard had come to comfort me. I told myself that I should check my emotions, lest I cause trouble.
“Bounty hunting lad, and that means you’re our own personal intel gatherer and you may now hunt the most infamous scum in this nation. I’ll be assigning you tasks, and you’ll be richly rewarded for each completed mark. We also have new equipment for you to pick up, none of that junk you’re carrying. I’m talking about equipment that would take a year’s worth of salary to buy.”
I thought to myself, how come we need a bounty hunter? We’ve only had small, disorganized gangs of lawbreakers, nothing that would require anything more than a squad of policemen. “When do I begin and what’s my first mark?”
“Now son, don’t be too hasty to begin, we still have training which will be done by the coalition. And son, the coalition will be co-ordinating you.”
I paused... if the coalition is getting its’ dirty hands into New Vorbis, most of my marks will probably be the insurgents. I cursed myself; the insurgents are nothing more than a rabble of lawless terrorists. “Aye sir, and when do I begin...”
                    30 days earlier
“I have another mark for you Viris,” said the raspy voice of my coalition co-ordinator.
I shuddered at the voice; every time I heard that voice it reminded me of something. That something was never good, and would always crawl up my spin, attempting to enter the recesses of my brain to uncover what that something was.
    “Nihlum consanguin( no bloodline)”
A surge of hate flowed through me. The scum using that name to me  I should hunt him instead of whatever mark he gives me. That name was not to be spoken of, even on a secure line such as this.
    “Yes sir.”
“I want you to hunt the president of New Vorbis… This little bird has become quite the nuisance… shall we say, he’s sung too many songs he’s not suppose to.”
I shuddered, so far all my marks had been insurgents; capturing insurgents and capturing a president were two different extremes. “Well what has he done...?” I asked.
“That doesn’t concern you filth. Do as I say and you shall get your reward.” the vile voice from the other line yelled. “You must meet me tomorrow at the normal place. I shall have the intel necessary for you to complete this mark.”
I heaved a breath and agreed to his job.
The lizard bared his teeth at the satphon. I went to sit down to the couch to continue watching the news. The lizard, still upset from my conversation, paced around the room snarling and squawking. I ruffled its cranial feathers, and it seemed to calm down. I whispered to it, “benelentis convitultio”  ( friend we will get revenge)
    29 days earlier
A crack of thunder and the flash of lightning seared the sky. The sky was lit by purple flashes, showing clouds much bigger than any starbattalion I had ever seen. The lizard flicked its tongue in and out in an attempt to gather the rain droplets, storing it for later use. Its skin glistened and reflected the streetlights as we ventured up the street. A pistol was holstered in my leg and a knife shrouded in my arm brace, ready to retract and to kill any unsuspecting victim. There will be no spilling of innocent blood tonight, only Nihlum consanguin. Each mark I had was innocent; always too late did I find out that they were average people living average lives. Each time I had sent them to the coalition to be enslaved or whatever the scum did to citizens, it was all a plot to get ‘This’ out of hiding, to admit to his failure, or to step down from office. I loaded my pistol and readied it. I opened the door and there the coalition informant sat waiting. His chair turned to view the painting behind him of a planet full of trees.
*flicker* I ran through the jungle, panting, running, but still they were following. I wanted to scream in frustration. *flicker*
I held the pistol steadily aimed at the forehead of my informer. The chair slowed turned around and the black clad man sat in the chair.
*flicker* The repulsorcar left and on the ground a pendant lay. I picked it up, and tossed it on the ground and shot at it. Nihlum consanguin *
The Black clad man chuckled at me, and lowered his hood. It was my informer from the coalition. I wavered my pistol and adrenaline rushed through me. “You,” I said in frustration. “You have tricked me for the last time.”
I then heard the voice of the person who originally called me, informing me of my rank-up to special operations. “Yes son... now lower that pistol and we’ll talk father to son,” the man said mockingly.
My lizard growled deeply, taken aback as well to the shifting voices. I’ve been played the fool, I said to myself. All those innocents taken away, and I had never been working for the militia.
“Pity you just figured it out, but oh well. The death warrant on your head will fetch a pretty penny.” the man chuckled.
I had been kidnapping innocents… even after the repeating this idea in my head it still didn’t dampen the pain. Now I also have the city I swore to protect hunting for me, and all due to this coalition informant.
I chuckled, “You know your intel is junk, and your words don’t intimidate me.”
The man shrugged, and smirked at me. Completely unarmed he still seemed to emanate a feeling of power, as if his hands clutched my legs and petrified my fingers, preventing me from firing. For a moment we only stared at each other, each other tempting the other to make the first move. There was a click of the door opening, and I quickly spun around, the knife retracted from its holding in my bracer. The black armour coalition force ran right into my blade. The lizard then attacked the next three black amour shock troopers of the coalition. I turned to see the black clad man priming a pistol. I aimed and fired, and the sound of the gunshot echoed through the room. As the black clad man’s smiling face feel to his desk, as if the gunshot was meant to occur, and he had been anticipating it. The smoke from the room grew, and it enshrouded the room. The smell of wounds and pain swam through my nose, like a rushing current. I felt hands grab my shoulders, and I couldn’t resist. I dropped my pistol. My final mark… dead, and my first kill. The distorted voice of the black armour shock troopers rang through my helmet. “You’re under arrest, stay still or we’ll be forced to shoot you.” As the other shock troopers checked the wounded and dragged out the dead, I truly saw what was happening. Two men killed, both by my hands. That would never clean me of the innocent blood on my hands. An armoured repulsorcar drove up the street, and out came the most pompous figure I had ever seen. He stared into my helmet, his face reflecting off my visor. His smile and posture reflected a man who could feign off all rebuttals and possibly any bullets heading his way.“I see that the hound has broken loose,” He then nodded for the shock troopers to lessen their grip on me. “You still have a mark to complete. If you complete this mark I will spare you of the trial that would surely sentence you to death. May I remind you that no one is exempted from the laws of the coalition.”
I nodded reluctantly. Being dead wouldn’t help me avenge the innocent.
“Here is the intel, and where you must kill This, I expect it to a fairly easy mark. After you’ve killed the president we shall find a more...fitting replacement.”
The shock troopers and coalition officer then returned to their repulsorcar and drove down the street. The rain cleaned the stench from the incident, and the dead bodies removed. The remnants of the battle cast out of the office. Only the painting had a red taint to it, the desk stained. My lizard, only scrapped from the encounter, came towards me. I stared into his eyes and promised revenge.
    Present Time New Vorbis
The wind rustled the grass, whispereing into my ear, reminding me of my guilt. The lizard sensed my unease, laying with his feathers erect in worry. I took off my Belanian helmet, and the beast gazed into my eyes. I spoke reluctantly, “my culture, my...people. They’re barbaric in nature.”
The lizard nodded as if it understood my speaking. “I don’t wish to kill.” I looked at my rifle with disgust, “Especially killing innocents.” I thought: why kill when there’s already enough killing being done in war? This was just another innocent who someone didn’t like. Sure This had submitted to authority, but he never agreed with the coalition’s ideals.

I looked triumphantly at my lizard, “I am giving mercy to This, and my contractors shall have to find another bounty hunter for the job.”
With this new revelation I would be nothing... I would have to go in hiding, the coalition had promised to make a bounty on my head if I didn’t complete my task.
I pondered upon what I should become. “Viris the medic,” I proclaimed. The beast cooed in excitement and surprise at my proclamation. All the innocents that have been hurt shall be paid two-fold by the coalition. What about the insurgents, they may allow me to work with them. The coalition must be stopped, before more are tricked, as I was. I am no long a hunter, but rather a healer. I then wrote a note on my rifle, “You have been given mercy, and perhaps you will return my favour This.”
I left my rifle and turned away from the city, walking away.

Zurthas Gunflick was born into a family of 1 child, his brother.  They lived near Anchorhead on Tatooine, living peacefully in support of the rebel alliance.  The Empire did not have a strong grip on the far corners of the planets on the far corners of the galaxy.  Zurthas, Fletchyr, and their friends enjoyed the thrill of taking down loan Storm Troopers wandering the nearby desert.

One day Zurthas was out by himself on the hills around town, when he saw an Imperial transport sitting on a plateau a few kilometers away.  He rushed home only to find his Father on the ground unconscious outside, his mother had been in Anchorhead and wouldn’t be home for a few hours.  He went inside to find his brother, looking throughout the house and then in his room.  In Fletchyrs room, he found the door busted open, the marks of a struggle all over the room, and a video datapad sitting on his desk.  Z picked up the data pad and turned it on, he noticed it was connected to a small camera, which had been smashed.  When the datapad turned on, a video popped up, Zurthas watched it intently and saw Fletchyr sitting at the desk saying, ”Whoever finds this, I’m being hunted by Storm Troopers, they found me at home, and are looking for me right now, I don’t know what force they’re authorized to use…”

*An explosion followed by blaster fire*

Fletchyr is now shown on the floor with a Storm Trooper standing over him.  The Stormie yelled, “You are under arrest for resistance against the Empire and possession of smuggled goods!”  One of the other Storm Toopers Walks up and hands several things to the leader, saying, “Sir, I found these in this room, they are the smuggled good we have been looking for.”  At that, They proceed to cuff Fletchyr and drag him out of the room.  One of the Stormies smashed the camera at that point.

Zurthas fell back into the chair when the video ended.  His mind was racing “What? Fletchyr, gone? How? Smuggled goods? But…” He couldn’t think strait and was beginning to get dizzy.

He woke up to his mother’s voice saying, “Zurthas, are you okay, what happened?”  He sat up, he was still in his brothers room, and his head hurt.  He had fallen unconscious after watching the video.  “What happened in here?  Where’s Fletchyr?” His mother asked.  Zurthas showed her the video, and she stood there, stunned.

8 long years later, Zurthas had become a renowned spy, known for his disappearing skills worldwide back on Bothawui.  His parents had moved back to their home planet, Bothawui, and had gladly been accepted back onto their clan lands.  Zurthas though, had moved to Dantooine, into seclusion to practice his martial arts and swords skills.

There came a day when Z woke up early one morning to find a large package on the ground outside near his house.  He brought it to his porch and left it there until he had finished several chores after lunch.  He finally got around to bringing the package inside the house.  When he opened it, he found a note, in his fathers hand writing, reading as so:  SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT

Dear Son,

I hope this package reaches you intact, and that I remember the coordinates of your house (It must be a hassle not having an address).  In this package is our clan armor.  While you have been in seclusion, the clan voted and picked you to have the armor passed down to.  Rendgo, the new leader, has told me to include the following rules in this letter:

  • You must respect the armor and keep it in excellent condition
  • You must add at least one feature to the armor
  • When you retire, the armor must be returned to the clan
  • You must arm yourself and the armor yourself, nothing is supplied
  • If anything happens to the armor, you must replace the damaged area or piece
  • You have been chosen to represent our clan with this armor, you must show politness, fierceness, and you must command respect

Well, as it says, treat it well.  Zurthas, please stay safe, for all our sakes.

                                                 With Love,

                                                         Koe Gunflick

When he was done reading the note, he opened a cabinet in his back room and placed the note in a perfectly sized pocket.  He then returned to the box and began pulling out the armor pieces.  He first split the very flexible chest armor and slipped it over his tight training shirt.  He opened up the bottom of the helmet and slipped it over his head and snout, checking that his ears fit in the built in slots.  He began clipping the arm pieces on, and put the gloves onto his long, thin hands.  He pulled the pants on and finally put his feet in the boots and clipped all the pieces of everything together.  As he did this, he noticed another small box, and one smaller box inside the original box.  He pulled both of them out, opened the bigger one, pulling out a bandolier and a belt, and inside the second box was an oxygen tank.  Clipping the oxygen tank onto the Bandolier and putting it on over his head, then clipping the belt around his waist, he examined the armor in the mirror.

He went into the back room and opened his weapons cabinet, pulling out 2 DE-10 Pistols, a SFOR Carbine, a LD-9 Rifle, 5 thermal detonators, 3 flashbangs, 10 miniature smokebombs, several trinqualizer darts, his 3 samurai swords (2 short and 1 long), his trusty dagger, and finally a black pocket containing his lightsaber.  He clipped the pistol holsters to the belt, along with the swords, the lightsaber, and the dagger.  The darts go into a small pocket, also on the belt, his thermal detonators fit into slots on the top of the bandolier, by his shoulder, the flash bangs clipped down the front of the bandolier, and the smoke bombs went onto the belt area of the bandolier.  His rifle used a sort of clip to attach to the back of the bandolier, and his carbine had a holster oh his right shin.  He then noticed a screen on the left bracer, so he turned it on.

He was able to stealth himself, turn on his night, infrared, and ultraviolet vision, the armor contained a life form sensor, and he could see a map of life forms in the area.  The armor also contained a built in shield generator, reflective plating, built in comm. Unit, air purification unit, and several other tricks and sensors.
Figuring he’d take the burden off his shoulders and make his modification now, he took off the armor.  He already had a great idea, he went to a chest in one of his rooms, and pulled out a miniaturized flame thrower and acid stream launcher.  He then took the right bracer of the armor and cut out a piece of it, and began to build in the two weapons.  He added arming and firing buttons, then added two hyper compressed flat tanks of napalm and acid in the back of the chest plate.
